Gates Consultants is the new name for long-established chartered quantity surveyors formerly known as Gates Construction Consultants, which has offices in Barnstaple, Plymouth and Bristol.
The rebranded firm was originally established in 1947 by John W Gates in Bridgwater and the practice has evolved to provide a wide range of professional services within the construction industry.
To celebrate the significant 70th anniversary, Gates held two events for local clients, associates and supporters in North Devon and Plymouth. The first ‘Platinum Party’ was held at Taw Restaurant, Petroc College in Barnstaple, quickly followed by a second event hosted by Royal Western Yacht Club at Plymouth’s Queen Anne’s Battery. More than 150 guests from the construction industry were welcomed with wine and canapés and networked with colleagues. To give a real sense of occasion, the price of beer and spirits, as charged in old money in the 1940s, were chalked up on rustic blackboards, and a collection of artefact tools of trade, used by quantity surveyors throughout the decades were on display. Local historians Naomi Ayre from North Devon Athenaeum and Chris Robinson from the Barbican, gave interesting insights into the history of Barnstaple and Plymouth respectively, since 1947.
The firm’s team of 11 professionals work from the head office in Barnstaple and offices in Plymouth and Bristol for clients across the South West region. Projects range from multi-million-pound houses to small community-led projects, skate parks and large commercial warehouses, with project values from £250,000 to £15m.
